Peep were a New York-based, Knitting Factory-associated quartet featuring a lineup of cello, saxophone, percussion, and trumpet/trombone. Though their songs are composed by group members, they're heavily based on Klezmer and other Eastern European traditions. Raucous, avant-garde informed improvisations, references to soundtrack music, and an oft-present sense of humor give it all a familiar "downtown" edge.
