b. New York City, New York, USA. Gottehrer’s career as a songwriter and producer stretched from the Brill Building era of the 60s to rock in the 90s. He is probably the only direct connection between Pat Boone and punk. As a teenager, he played piano and wrote songs, making his first record as Richie And The Playboys. While studying law at college he released ‘The Twistle by Troy And The T-Birds (1961) before meeting fellow writers Bob Feldman and Jerry Goldstein. The trio formed a prolific partnership, providing songs for Freddie Cannon and Pat Boone (‘Ten Lonely Guys’) before their first hit came with ‘My Boyfriend’s Back’ by the Angels, a 1963 number 1 in the USA. Over the next three years Feldman, Gottehrer and Goldstein wrote and produced over 100 singles, some on their own Stork label. The trio also performed and recorded as the Strangeloves. In 1966, Goldstein moved to the west coast, becoming the producer of War and Gottehrer joined forces with Seymour Stein to set up Sire Records. There he produced work by Martha Velez and the Climax Blues Band. Leaving Sire in 1975, he became involved with the growing New York punk scene around CBGB’s club, eventually producing early albums by Blondie, Richard Hell and Robert Gordon. During the 80s, Gottehrer continued to be active as an independent producer, working on albums by acts including Joan Armatrading, the Go-Go’s, the Yachts, Holly And The Italians, Marshall Crenshaw and the Colour Field.
