Sound installation artist and composer Ron Kuivila often uses electronic instruments of his own design, but is also noteworthy as an early user of ultrasounds and live sound sampling. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Kuivila has received commissions and honors from a number of sources, including the NYSCA, NEA, Jerome Foundation, and Austria's Ars Electronica. He has performed and exhibited all over North America and Europe, collaborating with composers and choreographers such as
Nicolas Collins,
Anthony Braxton, and Merce Cunningham. His pieces incorporate a range of sound sources, from his unique electronic devices to stun guns. Recordings of some of Kuivila's works have been released on labels including Lovely Music, Tellus, and Nonesuch. ~ Joslyn Layne
