Ronan Chris Murphy is an eclectic, versatile producer/engineer who has been involved with everything from alternative rock and punk to progressive rock and Latin music. Born in Washington, D.C., on June 23, 1967, Murphy was only in his teens when he first got into the music business. Murphy (who has also gone by R. Chris Murphy) got into the music business in the early '80s, when he sang with a Washington, D.C.-based punk band called Freak Baby. After Murphy's departure from Freak Baby in 1984, drummer Dave Grohl joined the band; Grohl went on to become a member of Scream (another D.C. punk combo), Seattle's ultra-influential Nirvana, and, in 1995, the Foo Fighters. Murphy, meanwhile, went on to perform with various alternative rock bands in the '80s, but by the end of the decade, he had shifted his focus from performing with bands to working behind the scenes as a producer/engineer. The '90s and early 2000s found Murphy tackling a wide variety of music; as a producer and/or engineer, he embraced everything from Afro-Cuban music with the famous Cuban salsa/Latin jazz outfit Irakere to progressive rock with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. Murphy and Fripp have worked together extensively; in addition to mixing and/or engineering new material that Fripp embraced with the various ProjeKct outfits (including ProjeKct One, ProjeKct Two, and ProjeKct Four), Murphy remixed some of King Crimson's classic '70s albums. The producer/engineer has also worked with drummer Terry Bozzio (formerly of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and the '80s new wave combo Missing Persons) and former Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse. In 2000, Murphy mixed the latter's Major Impact album. ~ Alex Henderson
