Miami-based producer
Ronny J has a style based around dark textures, booming 808s, and eerie atmospheres, and his beats have placed him high in the ranks of a new wave of rap producers that emerged as the 2010s bled into the 2020s. Along with providing the instrumentals for key tracks from
Lil Pump,
Juice WRLD,
Eminem,
Kanye West, and others,
Ronny J also releases mixtapes and albums of his own, such as 2020's Jupiter.
Ronny J was born Ronald J. Spencer, Jr. in New Jersey in 1992. Spencer grew up more interested in art and architecture than music, but after relocating to the Miami area for college, he began experimenting with music production and beatmaking. He discovered he had a talent for it and quickly fell in with the Miami hip-hop collective C9, a group of artists led by
Denzel Curry. His raw, experimental, and often lo-fi beats had their own unique essence, and his tracks soon became the backdrops for hit flows from big names in the burgeoning trap scene such as
Lil Pump and
XXXTENTACION. He also worked with artists such as
Ski Mask the Slump God,
Smokepurpp,
Keith Ape, and others before signing a deal with Atlantic in 2017. His debut mixtape,
OMGRONNY, appeared in 2018 along with singles like "WOTR" and "Doesn't Matter." That year, he also produced several songs on
Eminem's
Kamikaze album as well as tracks for
Famous Dex,
Desiigner,
Machine Gun Kelly, and many others. In 2019,
J continued to find success with collaborative tracks like the
Ty Dolla $ign and
Rich the Kid-assisted "Lights Out," and "Stack It Up" featuring
Lil Pump. His 2020 solo album, Jupiter, included appearances from Var$ity,
Duki,
Machine Gun Kelly, and others, and in 2021,
J teamed with longtime friend
Lil Pump for collaborative mixtape No Name. In this time, his production résumé grew to include work on tracks from
Kanye West,
Juice WRLD,
J Balvin, and others. In 2022,
J released singles "Hunnaround," "POUR IT UP," and the
Wiz Khalifa-assisted "ANOTHER ONE." ~ TiVo Staff
