Rothko

UK ambient / post-rock group

* En anglais uniquement

Mark Beazley has been releasing music under the name Rothko since 1998, on labels such as Bella Union, Lo Recordings, Too Pure and his own Trace Recordings label. Creating music using mainly just the bass guitar, Rothko's sound has invariably been hard to categorise, but is known for its darkly atmospheric sound palette and Beazley's chiming and counterpoint bass melodies.

On disbanding the original line up in 2000, Mark was signed to Too Pure in 2001, releasing the album A Continual Search For Origins, enlisting the help of the musicians from the band Delicate AWOL. He then went on to collaborate on two releases, again on Lo, with ambient master, Susumu Yokota; the Waters Edge 12” EP and the Distant Sounds Of Summer album in 2005.

Upon leaving Too Pure, Mark started Trace Recordings, and has been releasing his music on the label ever since, the first being Wish For A World Without Hurt, a collaboration with Washington DC based electronic sound artist James Adams aka BLK w/Bear. Since 2003, the group has consisted of an ever evolving band of musicians and artists, including longtime member, Michael Donnelly, with Johny Brown, James Stephen Finn and Inga Tillere, all from Band Of Holy Joy, Graham Dowdall aka Gagarin, Crawford Blair, Steve Parry, Tom Page, Ben Page and Sukie Smith. Mark continues to record and release his music on Trace Recordings, with 2018’s Blood Demands More Blood to widespread critical acclaim.

Rothko and Second Hand Poet have created an intimate sound world all of their own. Their upcoming singles are the debut collaboration between Mark Beazley’s Rothko and Second Hand Poet, aka Jamie Tipson. These two songs tell of the need for metamorphosis, the need to escape the confines of our enforced surroundings and relationships, and of coming to terms with ourselves in doing so. Featuring just bass guitar and voice, Rothko and Second Hand Poet have created sensitive and empathetic reflections of the human condition in 2020.
