Lillian Maring, the drummer/vocalist for San Francisco indie punk trio
Grass Widow, began
Ruby Pins as a slow-forming solo side project in 2010. Maring wrote songs inspired by dreams her friends had about her, recording from time to time on an old computer set up with a single microphone. She then posted these songs as rough demos on a tumblr page in between tours with the ever-busy
Grass Widow. By the summer of 2012, there was enough material amassed for a proper album and Maring retreated to the small town of Port Townshend, Washington where she recorded definitive versions of her songs with a handful of friends, but handled most of the work herself. The recordings were released as a self-titled debut LP on Portland, Oregon's M'Lady's Records the following June. Maring filled out
Ruby Pins as a live band by enlisting Bay area musicians Jennifer Weisberg, Brian Tester, and Wendy Farina. ~ Fred Thomas
