Throughout the latter half of the 2010s, singer/songwriter
Sam Burton's ambling, melancholy reflections earned him cache in the D.I.Y. cassette world, eventually leading to a deal with respected West Coast indie Tompkins Square, which released the full-length I Can Go with You in 2020.
A Salt Lake City native,
Burton illicitly taught himself to play guitar as a teenager, sneaking practice sessions on his stepfather's off-limits guitar. Inspired by
the Beach Boys and
Velvet Underground, he played in a shoegaze band before relocating to Los Angeles and developing a more acoustic folk-based approach that included ambient, sometimes psychedelic textures and introspective lyricism. He rose through the D.I.Y. cassette scene, releasing evocative and haunting homemade music on the Chthonic label and earning praise from small but influential blogs. After signing with Tompkins Square, the San Francisco label issued a pair of limited-edition 7" singles, followed in late 2020 by
Burton's debut album, I Can Go with You, which was produced by
Jarvis Taveniere (
