Either on his own or as frontman for Bay Area supergroup Digital Underground, Shock G has been one of the most consistently entertaining and innovative figures in hip-hop. Born Gregory Jacobs in 1963, Shock grew up on a steady diet of P-Funk. When he moved to Oakland in 1987 and formed Digital Underground, he wanted to create a hip-hop equivalent of George Clinton's famous group. Success came quickly, and in 1989 Digital Underground scored a giant hit with "Doowutchalike." The song was followed with the now famous "Humpty Dance" in 1990. Based on those two hits alone, Digital Underground's legacy would've been secured. But history is odd, and now they are perhaps best known for the exploits of one of their dancers, Tupac Shakur. Shock G instantly recognized the talent in Shakur and encouraged him to record. Shock even produced and guested on Tupac's first single, "I Get Around." Digital Underground, meanwhile, continued to crank out great albums throughout the early '90s. Though they would never score a hit as big as "The Humpty Dance," albums Sons of P and 1993's Body Hat Syndrome were critically acclaimed and further fueled their cult following. By the end of the decade, however, Shock was growing weary of DU's baggage.
