Although Rick Parker may be a magician in the studio, his professional musicianship and catchy songwriting are to be commended as well. Sparkler came onto the L.A. music scene much like the safe and sane firework that bears the same name: flashy, hot, and fast-burning. Their blend of Jangle Pop and Power Pop brings some Big Star references to mind, but more important is the band's tangible chemistry. This power trio collectively makes a sound nobody could duplicate. Parker's seductive voice mixed with bass player Tommy Black's serpentine rhythms and androgynous backup singing, making the drummer sound like a cross between Keith Moon's long lost son (if he had one) and Jody Stephens. Parker currently works from one of Southern California's best-kept secrets, a stellar recording studio called The Sandbox. Black fronts a Hollywood band called Melody Black.
