The duo known as
Specula (comprised of Specter Spec and Sigh Moan) started out as essentially a noise rock band, but eventually transformed into something entirely different. They released several 7" singles on the Monkeytech and Stomach Ache labels from 1991 through 1995, until releasing their full-length debut,
Erupt, on Scat in 1995. It was on this release that the group introduced their new direction -- a
Stooges-like sound, with enough attitude to make
Iggy Pop proud. Since there is no drummer or bassist in
Specula, the duo employed the help of
Urge Overkill's Blackie O. and
Material Issue's Mike Zelenko to lend some drum loops (Zelenko has also toured with the group).
Specula also incorporates homemade instruments into their sound, creating a wacked-out sense of unpredictability. The musical genres become successfully fused together after awhile, leaving the listener wondering if it's punk, experimental, alternative, or just good old rock & roll. After the release of
Erupt, the group embarked on a successful tour that took them well into 1996. ~ Greg Prato
