A Melbourne, Australia-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose grungy, reverb-doting style recalls the likes of
Sonic Youth, Stephanie Crase is the musician behind
Summer Flake, an alias for her solo material. Born and raised in Adelaide, Crase studied painting and film in college before she adopted her music moniker and began sharing self-penned home recordings. She released her debut Summer Flake EP with Sad Sax Records in 2012. The next year brought the EP Where Do I Go? via Heavy Lows Records before her debut long-player, You Can Have It All, appeared later in 2013 on the Rice Is Nice label. In the meantime, she continued work with the Ellen Carey-led band
Fair Maiden, which drew in part on the sounds of sunny '60s pop. Crase was a member of the official lineup for
Fair Maiden's self-titled debut, released in 2014. In 2015, the guitarist issued another
Summer Flake EP, Time Rolls By, which included a clanging cover of
the Rolling Stones' "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind." She brought in
Geoffrey O'Connor to produce her sophomore LP, 2016's
Hello Friends, also released on Rice Is Nice. ~ Marcy Donelson
