Formed in 1986 in Wellington, New Zealand,
the Wild Poppies began as a jangle pop-inspired band, but after a move to England explored a noisier, gaze-ier sound. Their first single, "Where Is Wellington/Stare at the Sun," was released in 1987, followed by their only album,
Heroine, that same year. By this time the band (Nick Taylor on guitar and vocals; Alan Carter on vocals, bass, and percussion; Andrew Young on vocals, guitar, and piano; and IDH on drums) had decamped to England, Oxford specifically, where they ended up as housemates to
Swervedriver. They toured some, worked on new songs, and released the Out of Time EP in 1989. They didn't last long after that, splitting up that same year. Over the years
Heroine became something of a collector's item, fetching up to $100 on the open market. In 2015 Manufactured and Pretty Olivia Records reissued the album as
Heroine: The Wild Poppies Complete Collection (1986-1989), teaming it with the band's two other releases and a few rare demos. ~ Tim Sendra
