Leeds'
Thick Syrup cranks out heavy riff-rock made all the more distinctive by singer Gemma Fleet's piercing vocals. The band was formed in 2013 by Guy, Paul, and Tom, all veterans of the city's punk and hardcore scenes who wanted to try something different and took inspiration from the
Meters,
Black Sabbath, and
Shocking Blue. The trio brought on organist Dom Berry in 2014, and the band began its search for a singer a year later. After the group discovered Fleet -- who had also performed with bands including the
Wharves, Trogons, and
Kasms -- the project became
Thick Syrup. The band's debut album,
Living in Leeds, was released in 2018 by Gringo Records. ~ Heather Phares
