Electronic duo
TV Rock scored one of the biggest Australian pop hits of 2006 with their chart-topping breakthrough single "Flaunt It." DJs/producers
Grant Smillie and
Ivan Gough were both influential club tastemakers even before collaborating as
TV Rock.
Smillie was the resident DJ at influential Melbourne club One Love, compiling a mix CD in the acclaimed Ministry of Sound series and hosting the popular Nova FM radio series Overdrive, while
Gough was the most prolific remixer in Aussie dance music history, best known for the 1997 cult classic "Summer Breeze" in addition a longtime stint spinning records at Melbourne's Room680.
Smillie and
Gough first teamed as
TV Rock in 2004, notching a series of hit remixes including Nu Electric's "No Matter What" and
Supermode's "Tell My Why" while working on their own debut LP. In early 2006, "Flaunt It," featuring rapper Seany B, crossed over from club phenomenon to mainstream smash, topping the Australian pop charts and spending half the year in the Top 50. The single later claimed highest-selling single and best dance release honors at the Australian Recording Industry Association's annual ARIA Music Awards, but despite its massive success
TV Rock's debut album, Sunshine City, fared poorly, a fate blamed in part on the failure of the follow-up single, "Bimbo Nation." The non-LP single "The Others" returned the duo to the Top 20 in early 2007. ~ Jason Ankeny
