At the age of 23 this woman carries herself with a gracefulness most of us will never achieve. Like a renaissance painting, a french morning or an old Hollywood diva, Vårin Strand bears an old soul. It’s in the way she talks, the way she performs, in her every gesture, her style and her music.
It is hard to believe Vaarin was never trained in classical music (although she did take lessons in Kveding, a traditional norwegian way of singing in a rhythmic and solemn way). As if these topics weren’t charged with enough emotion, Vaarin’s voice charges them with a timeless urgency, with the poignant affection of someone feeling it all.
Hearing Vaarin sing and seeing her perform is uncomfortable. She touches something in you that you thought you had tightly tucked away so you wouldn’t have to deal with it. “Sometimes I try not to do it, because it is emotionally draining, but I can’t repress it.” Vaarin can crack you wide open and she will. And the weirdest thing is: although it feels so horrible, so vulnerable - it is good, cleansing and honest.
