Led by Russia-born vocalist and cultural and political firebrand Larissa Stupar, Welsh death metal quintet Venom Prison subvert the misogyny inherent in the genre with a message of empowerment and catharsis. Emerging in 2016 with the uncompromising Animus, the band signed with Century Media ahead of the release of their fourth LP, 2022's Erebos.
Stupar, a self-described vegan straight-edge anarchist, founded the group in 2014 after leaving German hardcore unit Wolf Down. Employing a lethal mix of breakdowns and blastbeats, the band, which also includes guitarists Ben Thomas and Ash Gray (ex-Brutality Will Prevail), bassist Mike Jefferies, and drummer Jay Pipprell (Ninkharsag, ex-Unsanctum), debuted their modernist deathcore sound on the Primal Chaos EP in 2015. They inked a deal with Prosthetic Records the following year and released their full-length debut, Animus. Venom Prison issued their sophomore effort, the uncompromising Samsara, in 2019, with a collection of re-recorded early material, Primeval, arriving just one year later. The group inked a deal with Century Media in 2020, which released their fourth long-player, Erebos, in 2022. ~ James Christopher Monger
