Not to be confused with the corrupt turn-of-the-millennium mayor of San Francisco, this William Brown was actually an old blues crooner from yesteryear who sang chain gang hollers and pre-war blues. His voice was an amazingly textured instrument that became elastic when he cried out the elongated phrases of his sad-toned musings and traditional work songs. Brown's singing -- and his songs -- are so moving at times that you could swear that he and Hank Williams were separated at birth (if only Williams weren't a Caucasian man born some time after Brown).
