Toward the end of the 2000s, Australia turned into an unlikely hotbed for garage rock revivalist acts, and like their mates
Royal Headache and
Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Melbourne's
Woollen Kits specialize in scrappy, hooky tunes. Inspired by the hard-edged, no-frills musicianship of bands like
Modern Lovers and
the Velvet Underground, the trio formed in 2007. Settling on a permanent lineup, Tom Hardisty, Tom Ridgewell, and Leon Applebee released the 7" single Teenage Love in 2009, followed by two more 7"s (Maths and Shelley), before recording two full-lengths in 2012, their debut album
Woollen Kits and
