The Joshua Tree is het album dat de V.S. veroverde (en de rest van de wereld). Voor deze release, had de band aanzienlijk succes maar niet op de manier die zou volgen na The Joshua Tree. Het album liet het luide en boze van War achter zich en focuste op een subtieler, verfijnder geluid. De melancholische, onderzoekende eigenschap van dit album vangt U2 op het moment van een overgang, terwijl de band zichzelf probeert te herontdekken. Met nummers als “With or Without You”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “Where the Streets Have No Name”, “In God’s Country”, en “Running to Stand Still”, is dit album een van U2’s beste werken.
