This is an utterly charming collection of 18 traditional Irish pieces played on a variety of instruments from the tiny side of the arsenal. We have whistle, mouth harp (the kind that will break your teeth if you snap it too hard), harmonica, the flute and its little sister the piccolo, and, of course, spoons to help clean up the leftovers. In fact, one could say that the musicians could pack everything up in their pockets and be out the door before anyone noticed. Sometimes these instruments are heard in different combinations, a particularly winning one being the combination of more than one mouth or Jew's Harp. Seven musicians are involved in performing the music in a lovely manner, and they were recorded with great care and sparkling detail as well, the result being an album that is kind on the ear to say the least. Highlights include the epic three-harp "Banish Misfortune," the anonymous but pretty "Unnamed Jig," and a terrific piccolo solo, "The Spalpeen's Lament." The project was reissued on compact disc in the late '90s.
